2020 Virtual Burn Center Outing Generates $9,000 Donation

The 31st annual Burn Center Outing was cancelled due to the pandemic.  Instead we held a virtual fund raiser that generated $9,000 in donations.  The money was split between the two burn centers.  Thanks to everyone who participated

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center?s Burn Center provides specialized care for patients with multiple types of thermal and soft tissue injuries. In the past year we have cared for 239 inpatient burn patients, 1,302 outpatient burn survivor and have had 2,013 outpatient clinic visits. We have also performed 59 laser treatments in that time period.

The monies raised by the SFPE Golf Outing have benefited our patients and staff in the following ways:

Assisting with burn compression garments for patients who do not have the resources to pay for these without our assistance. Compression garments help lessen the appearance and impact of the scars after recovery.

Providing training for our SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) program. We now have 6 coordinators, 4 peer supporters and have another peer training session scheduled for August. Peer support volunteers visit with both inpatients and outpatients.

Supporting our burn survivor group which meets monthly, as well as quarterly survivor and family social
events.

Funding staff and burn survivors? attendance at the annual Phoenix Society World Burn Congress. This is
the largest gathering of the burn community.

Sponsoring trainee travel to the American Burn Association meeting in order to share novel research into
burns and recovery.

We at the Burn Center are so appreciative for the ongoing generosity of SFPE and those that support the annual Golf Outing to improve the lives of our burn survivors on a daily basis.

The Burn Program at Nationwide Children?s Hospital is an all-inclusive program dedicated to providing best outcomes to pediatric burn patients. As one of the select programs verified by the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons, burn patients and their families receive the expertise and support of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team from arrival to the hospital often into adulthood. The goal of the program is to provide optimal care to assure the best possible physical, psychological and social outcomes that promote a return to a healthy and active life.

Nationwide Children?s Hospital burn team provides care to children with all types of burns, from thermal injuries to cutaneous conditions, delivering collaborative burn treatment throughout the patient care continuum to optimize outcomes. Skilled doctors, nurses, child life specialists, dietitians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, psychologists, therapeutic recreation specialists, massage therapists and case managers participate to assure comprehensive individualized patient care.

Additionally, to promote an environment of safety dedicated burn nurses deliver a nationally established burn prevention program to school age children throughout the district. The burn program staff also provides burn education to the academic and medical community to build collaboration and foster knowledge of pediatric burn care.

This annual golf outing will raise money for the Nationwide Children?s Hospital Burn program to provide worldclass care and support for the families they serve and help fund programs that foster return to a healthy active life for both the burn survivor and their families:

  • Healthy Healing Burn Camp welcomes burn survivors (and others with conditions similar to burn injuries) and their families who have been treated in the Burn Center at Nationwide Children?s Hospital, to come together to share their unique experiences. Families are supported by a team of Nationwide Children?s staff members who have designed a program that focuses on community building, strengthening family bonds, giving and receiving support and learning new ways to thrive. Funding will help cover the costs of this camp.
  • Phoenix World Burn Congress is one of the largest gatherings for the burn community. Its goal is to connect those in the burn community with support, resources, and each other to help aide in the journey of recovery from a burn injury. Funding will sponsor staff and patient families to attend this event.

The Purpose

Each year the Central Ohio Chapter of SFPE holds a golf outing to raise money for the Ohio State University - Wexner Medical Center Burn Center Development Fund.  The Center for Burn Care at The Ohio State University Medical Center is a multidisciplinary center trained to care for patients with all types of burns.  The unit sees hundreds of patients every year, including fire fighters who are injured in the line of duty. With the help of doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacist and physical/occupational therapists, the team works to return every patient to their original lifestyle. This annual golf outing raises money for the OSUMC Burn Development Fund.

There are many ways this Fund provides support and assistance to patients and families whose lives have been affected by the ravages of fire:

  • Provided each home-going patient with a much-needed "SFPE Home Discharge Kit" which includes pressure garments and 7–10 days worth of dressing supplies and medications.
  • Garments, wigs, food, clothing, housing for burn patients and families.
  • Provides burn prevention educational information to the community, with the nurses and staff working specifically with the children and families at daycares, schools, clinics and City Hall. During this past year, the staff has also been working with the OSU Department of Student Affairs and the Columbus Division of Fire to educate the OSU students both on and off campus. This has included Smoke Outs for the Greek organizations, a Welcome Week for incoming OSU Freshman, and a Burn Prevention Display at the OSU Student Union in February.
  • Development of web based training for burn care for house staff
  • Enhancing staff performance and patient rehabilitation through the use of speaker programs and specialized burn care conferences and educational opportunities.

The Ohio State University created a video featuring SFPE.  The video can be found on the Wexner Center Web page, under “Ways to Give”  and then “Donor Stories”.   Click below for a link to the video.
