The Purpose

Each year the Central Ohio Chapter of SFPE holds a golf outing to raise money for the Ohio State University - Wexner Medical Center Burn Center Development Fund.  The Center for Burn Care at The Ohio State University Medical Center is a multidisciplinary center trained to care for patients with all types of burns.  The unit sees hundreds of patients every year, including fire fighters who are injured in the line of duty. With the help of doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacist and physical/occupational therapists, the team works to return every patient to their original lifestyle. This annual golf outing raises money for the OSUMC Burn Development Fund.

There are many ways this Fund provides support and assistance to patients and families whose lives have been affected by the ravages of fire:

  • Provided each home-going patient with a much-needed "SFPE Home Discharge Kit" which includes pressure garments and 7–10 days worth of dressing supplies and medications.
  • Garments, wigs, food, clothing, housing for burn patients and families.
  • Provides burn prevention educational information to the community, with the nurses and staff working specifically with the children and families at daycares, schools, clinics and City Hall. During this past year, the staff has also been working with the OSU Department of Student Affairs and the Columbus Division of Fire to educate the OSU students both on and off campus. This has included Smoke Outs for the Greek organizations, a Welcome Week for incoming OSU Freshman, and a Burn Prevention Display at the OSU Student Union in February.
  • Development of web based training for burn care for house staff
  • Enhancing staff performance and patient rehabilitation through the use of speaker programs and specialized burn care conferences and educational opportunities.

The Ohio State University created a video featuring SFPE.  The video can be found on the Wexner Center Web page, under “Ways to Give”  and then “Donor Stories”.   Click below for a link to the video.

On September 18, 2017, the Central Ohio SFPE presented a check for $30,000 to the OSU Burn Center.
